Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters
At the turn of the 19th century, Amelia Peabody inherits a fortune and decides to travel from England to Rome. There she befriends Evelyn Barton-Forbes, a young lady abandoned by her lover after she is cut out of her rich relatives' will. Together they travel to Egypt, where Evelyn is almost kidnapped, surrounded by unexplainable accidents and a mystery involving an ancient mummy's tomb. Amelia is determined to solve the mystery and protect her new friend.
This story is almost like an Agatha Christie novel, except there is the addition of some actual Egyptology mixed in. Christie spends a lot of time talking and thinking... Peters throws in some history and adventure. Amelia is also capable and courageous, and has no problem with going against Victorian traditions of what a single woman should do with her life. She simply does what she wants and doesn't worry about what "people will think". Of course, there's also some romance tossed in to help things along. This is the first book in the Amelia Peabody series, so if this story catches you, keep reading!
