If you like BBC mysteries, you will enjoy M.C. Beaton's "Hamish Macbeth" series. Based in and around the hamlet of Lochdubh, Scotland, these murder mysteries center around a tall, red-haired policeman who enjoys staying in his small little corner of the world despite being the only one who has the brain power to solve crimes. There are a few love interests thrown in, plus an alcoholic boss whose hatred for Hamish is always a problem.
There are at 28 books in this series. Although the first was published in 1985, the series is still ongoing, and I've read them out of order of course. For my own selfish purposes, I will list them in order and emphasize the ones I've read:
