The Searchers

The Searchers by Alan LeMay

Mart Pauley's family was killed by Comanches when he was a little boy.  Fifteen years later, the Comanches return to kill his adopted family and kidnap his adopted sister, 10 year old Deborah.  Amos, her uncle, joins with Mart to track down the Indians and rescue the girl.

The day after I finished this book, the John Wayne movie was on television.  A more realistic, truer remake would be a wonderful idea (just like True Grit).  The story was twisted to showcase John Wayne, and it had way too much melodrama, which is typical of the time this western was filmed. For some reason, they even changed his characters' name from Amos to Ethan. That said, the book was so much better than the movie, but how many times have I thought that!?!
