Chocolat by Joanne Harris
A lovely, mysterious woman and her daughter come to the small town of Lansquenet to open a chocolate shop just before Lent. Even before she opens her doors, she runs afoul of the pious village priest, who looks on her treats as an unnecessary indulgence. He preaches against her sinful shop, but most of the village is drawn in by her uncanny ability to know exactly what they need. All is brought to a face-off when she plans to celebrate Easter with an elaborate pagan chocolate festival.
I liked this story so much, I read the book in two days. The magical aspect of chocolate is always a winner for me... witch or not, Vianne knows how create delicious, pure edibles that couldn't help but be a cure for whatever ails a person. Some books seem written with the nagging feeling that the author dreams of a movie deal, but this story is written in such a detailed way that you WANT it to be a movie. Now I have to track down the movie version with Johnny Depp... Netflix is pretty worthless now.
