The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling
These eight stories tell how Mowgli, a Man-Cub rescued by Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther, grows up according to the Law of the Jungle.
I know I should have read this book when I was a kid, but thanks to the Disney movie I thought I knew the whole story. True, Walt took bits from almost all of the tales, but true to form, the book is much better. Although I miss Baloo singing "Bear Necessities" and scratching against a palm tree, for a kids' book it was pretty realistic... for example, I don't remember Mowgli in the movie killing Shere Kan & skinning him. That might have been a little intense for animation.
