The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman by Ernest J. Gaines
Gaines' novel covers the story of Jane's life, which spanned over 100 years. Born a slave in Louisiana, she was freed at the end of Civil War, then struggled to make a life for herself up until the time of the Civil Rights Movement.
This is a excellent book for readers of all ages to learn about not only slavery but also the courage needed to overcome prejudice. I liked Jane; I was inspired by Jane's ability to not only survive but keep a loving heart. People looked up to her, because of her innate common sense, even though she was illiterate and black.
