As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner
Stream of consciousness story of the Bundrens, a dirt poor family determined to fulfill their mother's dying wish; to be buried in her hometown.
I guess this story was effective since, if nothing else, I had a strong dislike for most of the characters. The father was a lazy, stubborn bum who continually guilted his family into doing what he should do himself. Their mother thought it would be great to punish her children since she made the miserable choice to marry their father. The children, despite working hard, were constantly beat down by life. If this is what is was like to be poor in the South in the 1930's, it's amazing everyone didn't kill themselves.
