Odd Thomas

Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz

Odd Thomas, a twenty year old fry cook, has an unusual secret; he can see lingering ghosts who are not ready to pass on to their next life.  Only a handful of people that he loves & trusts are aware of Odd's talent, including his girlfriend and the local police chief.  So when a man he nicknames Fungus Man comes to town surrounded by evil apparitions, Odd tries desperately to prevent a mass killing.

If you suspend your belief, this is an excellent book.  No twenty year old cook would be so quick thinking and intelligent, no matter how crazy a childhood he survived.  That said, I really enjoyed reading this novel.  I liked all of the characters, but the ghost of Elvis was probably my favorite.  Elvis typified the crux of the story: humor combined with tender sadness.
