Saving CeeCee Honeycutt

Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman

Twelve year old Cecilia has spent most of her life caring for and being embarrassed by her psychotic mother, while her father is nowhere to be found.  Then her mother is hit and killed by an ice cream truck, and Cecilia goes to live with her Great Aunt Tallulah in Savannah, Georgia.  Being raised in Ohio, CeeCee is overwhelmed by the warmth and charm of Southern hospitality, from Aunt Tootie, her cook Oletta, and an assortment of neighbors and friends.

This story reminded me of The Secret Life of Bees, or The Help, since these stories are about sad waifs taken in by strong Southern women.  I enjoyed the beginning and middle of this book, but then it lost steam.  The ending seemed a little forced, and while I read it, all I could think about was that the author wrote this book with the sole intent of selling the rights for a movie.
